CLIMATE CRISIS
Food insecurity, migration and global warming are closely linked.
Increasing temperatures, changing precipitation patterns, and greater frequency of some extreme weather events are greatly affecting the price and availability of food. Food production alone accounts for nearly 20% of green house gas emissions and its transportation, packaging, and distribution further add to our growing emissions. The impacts of global warming also influence global migration with 40.5 million people across the planet being displaced in 2020 largely due to these impacts. (Source: The Great Climate Migration) The intersection of environmental issues and racial justice cannot be denied: it is documented that Black and Brown people are disproportionately impacted by the climate crisis.
For these reasons and many others, Food Justice DMV is deeply committed to reducing our environmental impact through proven strategies while providing desperately needed food and other resources to the families we serve.
